Sleep Studies
GRMC understands the importance of a good night’s sleep to your health. If you or a loved one has trouble sleeping, it can affect productivity, your mood, and even lead to serious health conditions and syndromes.
The Sleep Center at GRMC – in conjunction with Advanced Sleep Centers – is a program that offers a comfortable environment for the diagnosis of:
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Insomnia
- Snoring
- Restless leg syndrome
It may be time for a sleep study when you have had trouble sleeping for more than a month or if you are tired during the day for unknown reasons. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, it is important to have the cause evaluated in a sleep lab. Recent studies show that a high percentage (30-50%) of people diagnosed with insomnia actually have another sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea.
A sleep study is a non-invasive, painless evaluation of your sleep. Electrodes attach with paste and they monitor your brain waves, rapid eye movements, breathing patterns, respiratory efforts, oxygen levels, snoring, muscle tone and leg movements, electrocardiogram and heart rate. You are able to move from side to side.
Determine if you have a sleep disorder
Your physician can help you determine whether you have a sleep disorder or not. If you answer yes to any of the questions in the Self Evaluation Quiz below, you may have a sleep disorder:
- Have you been told that you snore loudly or quit breathing while you sleep?
- Do you wake up with headaches, fogginess, achy muscles, dry mouth or heartburn?
- Do you fall sleep easily during the day, while driving or during physical activity?
- Are you very tired or sleepy during the day or have a hard time concentrating or staying awake?
- Are you overweight or gaining weight?
- Do you toss and turn, jerk or kick or are otherwise restless during sleep?
- Do you have high blood pressure, heart disease or pain in your bones or joints?
- Do you wake frequently for no apparent reason?
- Do you sweat excessively or have a pounding or irregular heartbeat during the night?
- Do you sleepwalk or talk in your sleep?
If you are interested in a sleep study, please talk with your Primary Care Physician, who can complete a referral for this service.
